What to Know About Recycling and Reusing Tires

Old tires can be found everywhere. From the shredded remnants of highway blowouts to mountains of rubber created in landfills, old tires are frequently cast off and forgotten. But what are the other options for tires that are past their prime? You can choose to take them to a tire recycling facility if one is available near you or even create a useful DIY product. Why Should You Recycle Your Tires?

In the US, over 300 million tires are disposed of every year. That is an alarming ratio of almost one per person. Disposing of tires in landfills causes an increase in rodents and mosquitoes which can spread diseases. Because tires are made of synthetic rubber, they are non-biodegradable. Scientists have estimated a tire can take up to hundreds or even thousands of years to fully decompose. Disposed tires also create a fire risk since they trap methane gas, and these fires are notoriously difficult to extinguish.
 
A positive fact, however, is that old tires can also be used as an alternative for fossil fuel. These tires can be recycled and made into tire-derived fuel (TDF). The process helps to produce over 25 percent more energy than coal and it is more energy-efficient. It is estimated a single tire contains about 5 gallons of oil.
 

Ways to Repurpose Old Tires

Recycled tires can also be turned into many useful products. Many resourceful crafters have made a variety of creations from their old tires. They can be used for garden planters, playground equipment, outdoor furniture and decorative ornaments. The synthetic material from the tires has also been very effective in creating rubber modified running tracks, artificial playing fields and rubber modified asphalt. It should be noted that research shows tires slowly seep toxic chemicals into the surrounding environment on a long-term scale when exposed to the elements. Because of this, it is recommended edible plants are not grown in tires, but many other applications should be fine.

The days of burning your old tires are long gone. It may be a bit inconvenient to recycle your old tires, but it is our environmental responsibility to make sure these used tires are properly disposed, recycled or reused. The GOODYEAR SPRING PROMOTION EVENT is a manufacturer’s mail-in rebate. This is a consumer tire rebate event for select Goodyear tires. To qualify for this event, you must purchase your eligible tires between March 11, 2024, and the expiry date of June 30, 2024. One mail-in rebate form per sales receipt/invoice. Limit one (1) mail-in or online rebate per qualifying purchase, per visit. Limit one (1) rebate form per tire purchase, per envelope. Limit four (4) rebates per individual consumer, per promotion period. Federal and provincial taxes are calculated on the selling price before the rebate. Purchase of a minimum of a set of four tires is required to receive the full rebate amount. Rebates are also available per tire on a prorated basis with a minimum purchase of four tires and a maximum purchase of six tires per sales receipt/invoice. The consumer must submit the rebate form online or fill out and mail the form along with a copy of the original sales receipt/invoice to the address printed on the form postmarked on or before July 31, 2024. Offer is only open to residents of Canada and is only valid for tire purchases from a participating Canadian retailer that operates a retail location in Canada. This mail-in rebate offer cannot be combined with any other Goodyear rebate offer. This is a consumer rebate that also applies to business-to-business purchases, excluding tires sold to national accounts, government accounts, P&R accounts, secondary supply points, other retailers or any other delivery for the account of Goodyear. All sales receipts/invoices submitted must include detailed product and customer sold-to information to be eligible for rebates.
